Blacksburg’s New, Fresh, All-American Diner to Honor Legendary Coach on His Last Home Game Date at Virginia Tech; $1 From Each Beamer Frank will Benefit Herma’s Readers
While Gameday will not honor Virginia Tech Head Football Coach Frank Beamer with an appearance in Blacksburg at his last home game, Hwy 55 will.
Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries, which opens its doors in Hokie Nation today, has declared Saturday, November 21 Frank Beamer Day. The fresh, All-American Diner will feature a hot dog, aptly named the Beamer Frank, on his day and will donate $1 from each Beamer Frank sold to Herma’s Readers, an organization founded by the coach in 2008 as a tribute to his mother, an educator for 30 years. Herma’s Readers promotes literacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia and has distributed more than 100,000 books to-date in order to do so.
“We thought ESPN Gameday owed coach Frank one final visit and that isn’t happening so we decided we were going to honor him as only Hwy 55 can,” said Don Downard, the franchise owner of the Hwy 55 in Blacksburg. “We even understand that Frank loves hot dogs so I’m sure he’s going to love this one, created and named in his honor.”
The “Beamer Frank,” starting at $1.99, will feature a special team of toppings that reflect Virginia Tech colors, including pimento cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce.
“Whenever Hwy 55 opens, we immediately become a great neighbor and a steward in the communities we serve,” said Hwy 55 president and founder Kenney Moore. “Nothing defines the integrity of this great Hokie Nation than its leader over the past 28 years. So, we felt like he deserved his own day and the Beamer Frank just seemed like the natural way to honor him.”
In addition to featuring the Beamer Frank, Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries boasts a fresh, All-American diner experience with fresh, never-frozen burgers, premium sliced cheesesteaks piled high on steamed hoagies, and frozen custard made in-house every day. With its open-grill design, the kitchen’s dedication and care when hand-crafting meals is front and center.
Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries in Blacksburg is located at the University Mall Shopping Center, 775 University City Blvd. It is the second Hwy 55 in Virginia, and the only one in Blacksburg.
