New Sweet Corn sampled at NRA SHOW

Columbia Fresh Produce, located in Walla Walla, Washington, announced today that it is representing a new sweet corn with a great fresh taste for the food service industry, and retail grocers of all types. The sweet corn, available currently in 6-inch long cobs, is pre-cooked and vacuumed packed, offering an amazingly long shelf life when kept refrigerated. “We can’t wait to sample this delicious sweet corn on the cob to attendee’s at the upcoming National Restaurant Association annual Expo,” said Dewight Hall, owner of Columbia Fresh Produce. The show, held annually at the McCormick Place in Chicago, draws thousands from the foodservice industry.

The sweet corn variety is a peaches and cream seed, which is a bi-colored (mixed yellow and white kernels) corn offering great visual appeal and a fresh crunchy taste. “You will not believe the taste of this corn as compared to frozen products offered today,” Hall offered.

The sweet corn, branded Sunbites, had an introduction at the Atlanta Food Service Expo in October of 2015 and received rave reviews. “We cannot wait to introduce this great new product to the rest of the food service industry,” offered Rick Bella, Director of Business Development at Columbia Fresh. “The taste of this sweet corn and the crispness of the kernels is no comparison to what some in the industry are using today. I know buyers will be very interested in this great-tasting and easy-to-use product,” he added.

This sweet corn grows in some of the richest vegetable growing regions of North America where cool nights increase the sugar content of the corn. It offers not only a consistent size, but also simple and fast warming preparation times, allowing users to prepare orders quickly. Warming is easy via microwave, steam tables, boiling, or grilling. Since the product is pre-cooked, it only needs to warm to serving temperature, and with individually vacuum-sealed ears, shrink or loss of product is almost non-existent. No shrink, no cleaning, and easy, fast preparation are all welcomed features to restaurant operators.

The variety of uses this corn offers extends beyond a side dish or entrée complement to include appetizers and small plate menus. Columbia Fresh is excited to present this great product at the NRA show May 21 through 24, booth 8462 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

It is currently in distribution from Testa Produce Company, Chicago, IL, and Caito Foods, Indianapolis, IN. Columbia Fresh is seeking interested distributors for this exciting product. Ruben’s Mexican Grill (Dyer, Indiana) is using Sunbites three different dishes; a traditional Elote Corn on the Cob, Shrimp & Corn Soup, and a new Corona Beer Battered Sunbites Sweet Corn Fritter appetizer! “This product is so easy to use and it saves me time, and has allowed me to offer three unique new dishes to our menu with very little effort”, said Chef Ruben Calvo of Ruben’s Mexican Grill (Dyer, Indiana).
