Smallcakes: A Cupcakery and Creamery has been slowly adding cupcake infused ice cream into Smallcakes locations for the past 2 years and now the push to be Americas favorite cupcake and ice cream store is on.
Jeff Martin knew that Smallcakes had to follow up their amazing cupcakes with another in-store offering that would change the cupcake game.
“We wanted to incorporate something easy for our owners to produce in-store and something that was very special for the Smallcakes brand,” says Martin, who has always loved ice cream and wanted to figure out how to reinvent a classic. “People are so used to rock hard boring ice cream and I wanted people to still have the rich, decadent flavor, but also have a creamy product, even if they bought a pint and it sat in their freezer for two days.” he says.
Martin launched cupcake infused ice cream in 2014 in Kansas City, offering specialty ice cream using his Smallcakes cupcakes. “I thought, how do you get the Red Velvet ice cream to taste like our amazing Red Velvet cupcake?…throw it in the mix.” he says with a smile while scooping some Red Velvet ice cream for a customer.
Every location that serves the Smallcakes cupcake infused ice cream makes small batches fresh and in-store daily. Martin says, “it was very important to make the ice cream in-house because that makes it special, anyone or any brand can sell that hard stuff, but what makes that special…nothing.”
Smallcakes offers 12 daily flavors including Red Velvet, Butter Cookie, Cookie Cheesecake, Mint Chocolate Chip, and of course, Vanilla Bean and Chocolate are mixing everyday. Smallcakes experienced its best year in 2015 for growth. With 130 locations and 30 more in production, with both ice cream and cupcakes, Jeff says “ the growth is largely due to us offering more items that are unique and special, which then makes the customer experience better.”
Smallcakes is widely known for its unique flavors and exceptionally moist desserts. Martin and Smallcakes have received national recognition following three appearances on the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, a feature on the morning television show The View, catering cupcakes to star-studded events such as the MTV Video Music Awards, and being listed as one of the Top Ten Cupcake Places to try in the Country by USA Today.
The cupcakery’s daily menu features 12 signature flavors – Birthday Cake, Caramel Crunch, Chocolate Cream, Chocoholic, Cookies N Crème, Hot Fudge Sundae, Lemon Drop, Peanut Butter Cup, Pink Chocolate, Pink Vanilla, Red Velvet, and Vanilla-N-Chocolate – as well as a rotation of over 140 specialty flavors such as Fat Elvis, Cannoli, Maple Bacon, Strawberry Cheesecake, Tiramisu, Kentucky Bourbon, and Pumpkin.
