A healthy, new Florine Mark signature series salad is also added to the menu
Buscemi’s, the popular and growing chain that has been selling Detroit’s original square pizza by the slice since 1956, has announced the return of a classic.
To celebrate the company’s 60th anniversary year (and National Pizza Month), Buscemi’s has reintroduced its ‘Detroit Style’ pizza. It’s the same delicious pizza the party shoppe made famous in the 1960’s and 70’s – by putting cheese directly on the dough and topping it with Buscemi’s famous sauce and old world small cup pepperoni. The pizza is baked in the company’s stone deck ovens, which caramelize the cheesy crust.
“My father, (Paul Buscemi) made us stop baking these delicious pizzas because it was so labor intensive,” says Anthony Buscemi, president of Buscemi Enterprises, Inc. “We had to make each dough ball by hand, oil the individual square pans, hand press into the pans, keep the dough in the cooler overnight, and we’d do that every day by the hundreds!”
Paul Buscemi founded the original Buscemi’s at Eight ½ Mile and Gratiot back when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president and Elvis was at the top of the charts. For six successful decades, the company has proudly served its trademark Torpedo Italian and Baby submarine sandwiches and pizza by the slice, made with authentic Italian ingredients, to millions across metro Detroit – and the tradition continues.
“Earlier this year, we started test-marketing our original Detroit Style pizza in three locations, selling it by the slice and as a whole pizza pie,” Buscemi explains. “Customers went crazy for it! We had to bring it back by popular demand!”
Buscemi’s is now offering Detroit Style pizza at participating franchise locations. ($1.79 for individual slices; $10.99 for an 8-slice pizza.) In addition, a new Florine Mark signature series salad called “Florine’s Garden Salad” has been added to the menu for $4.99 at participating locations.
“This salad is a delicious and healthy addition to the menu,” says Florine Mark, President and CEO of The Weight Watchers Group, Inc. based in Farmington Hills, MI. “It works great as a stand-alone meal or you can add it to another favorite item at the store.”
To celebrate the new menu items, the company has launched new “Trust the Crust” TV commercials featuring Anthony Buscemi and his grandson, Anthony Buscemi (little A), who represents the 4th generation for the longtime family business. Anthony’s son Paul (3rd generation) handles all purchasing and distribution of Buscemi food products.
Pizza Today Magazine consistently lists Buscemi’s among the “Top 100 Pizza Chains in the Country” and the company continues to thrive. What started with one shoppe in East Detroit has grown to 45 franchise locations. Three new Buscemi’s franchises opened in recent months in Wyandotte, Waterford and Imlay City. Additional new franchises are slated to open in the coming months in Orchard Lake, Waterford and Centerline.
“We built up a quality brand name over 60 years and party store owners want to be part of it, converting their existing stores to a Buscemi’s franchise,” Buscemi explains. “By offering beer, wine, liquor and lottery, plus our pizza by the slice, we are unlike any other pizza place. We look forward to the next 60 years!”‘
