New KanPak Penn Yan Facility Yogurt Byproducts Supply Local Farmer with Electricity

New KanPak Penn Yan Facility Yogurt Byproducts Supply Local Farmer with ElectricityKanPak, a global leader in aseptically packaged coffee, dairy, specialty beverages and desserts, is ramping up production at its newest facility, located in Penn Yan, New York. With the addition of this facility to KanPak’s portfolio, the company has secured itself as a leader in the aseptic dairy business.

A unique feature to the Penn Yan Factory is the facility’s relationship to the area. As part of KanPak’s continued dedication to sustainability, the Penn Yan team works with a local, fourth generation farmer to turn facility waste into energy. All whey from yogurt production is supplied to the farm. A portion of the whey is fed to their cows, with the remainder making electricity with a bio digester.

“Using KanPak’s waste to power our farm has really been a full circle of ecology. It saves money and it generates clean power,” said Don Jensen III.

KanPak acquired the Penn Yan Factory in late 2014. Since the acquisition additional aseptic production lines have been installed and recently commissioned, expanding the production capability of the facility. Increased production will support the diversification of KanPak’s customers while also meeting the demand anticipated due to continued growth.

“The benefit of a facility in the Northeast is that KanPak can now take advantage of the wealth of great fresh milk that exists in upstate NY while also ensuring consistency for customers with our common manufacturing platforms both here in the US and abroad. This is also one of the most densely populated areas of the country and we can now more efficiently support our many customers with current and future operations in these important markets” says Larry McGill, President and Chief Executive Officer, KanPak
