Everybody is constantly searching for their new favorite restaurant that is quaint, tasty, romantic, unique, enjoyable and most importantly to many, affordable. We publish our review to enjoy those very same things and to help inform others about hidden gems that we discover.
We found such a place located in the heart of the historic St Charles, MO. St Charles is popular for being the state of Missouri’s first capitol. St Charles is filled with unique and interesting places making it a perfect afternoon, day or weekend destination.
The history of this community is intriguing and appears to me to lack the appreciation that it deserves from the local communities. Many frequent the casinos in St Charles, but in my personal opinion they are the least intriguing attractions of this historic community.
The location is Magpies Cafe, 903 South Main Street, St Charles, Missouri 63301. Call (636) 947-3883. Hour of operation are Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm.
The setting is one that can’t be replaced or compared to especially for those that appreciates the outdoors and/or history. They have indoor seating as well as outdoor seating. Both are unique and offer the perfect seating for many different occasions. However, if you enjoy a relaxing patio with a beautiful setting Magpies is the place for you.
The title to the property dates back to 1821 when it was proofed to Charles Tayon. Tayon served as the Spanish Governor of St Charles from 1793 to 1803. Tayon had distinguished himself during the Revolutionary War in the defense of San Carlos (St Louis). As a reward for the outstanding defense of Fort Joseph, Tayon was granted 10000 acres of land in St Louis County, which is why he came to the area.
This was probably one of, if not the largest settlement in St Charles. The property has passed through many hands since its beginning including the Botany family who owned the property for more than 90 years. In more recent times it was known to the locals as “The Witch’s House” because the family that made home here practiced “white” witchcraft.
Enough of the history lesson. What are we really talking about here is “food.” Today, Magpies Cafe cuisines are made with a little of their own witchcraft. The menu offers some of the best cuisines in St Charles or possibly in the St Louis metro area. It is a perfect destination for St Louis area residents to spend an afternoon, the day or even a weekend.
Magpies Cafe Lunch Menu offers everything from appetizers ranging in price from $4.95 for their Cheese Bread to $9.95 for their Trio of Dips, which is irresistible, followed by Soups, Salads & Quiche, which are rarely found, ranging in price from $5.95 to $11.95. If those are not enough to satisfy the culinary lion inside you try their Sandwiches that range from $6.50 to $10.50 or their Flatbread Pizza that range from $5.95 to $9.95 and end that journey with some of their scrumptious legendary homemade desserts ranging from $4.95 to $6.96.
After a lunch like that I would recommend that you enjoy a glass of wine and spend the afternoon enjoying their atmosphere, whether you’re inside or outside, and wait for dinner. The Dinner Menu is the most impressive.
The Dinner Menu also offers a broad range of cuisines everything from Pasta’s ranging from $13.95 to $17.95 to Fish Tacos with blackened Mahi with their house made salsa and cilantro dressing for $18.95 to the finest Filet of Beef, 8 oz center cut top choice steak for $26.95.
Magpies wine list has been carefully chosen to pair perfectly with their cuisines ranging in price from $22 to $32. Many wines are from different areas of the world, including, my favorite, Missouri wines. I appreciate it when local restaurants use local products. Like St Charles, I think Missouri wines are undervalued by local area residents.
The drinks selection is everything from specialty drinks (non-alcoholic & alcoholic), beers, wines and soft drinks that fall within normal price ranges.
I feel like I could go on and on, but to sum it all up St Louis Restaurant Review awards Magpies Cafe in St Charles with a 4.5 Star Rating. We recommend that you visit St Charles and see what is has to offer, but more importantly, we highly recommend Magpies Cafe. We want the thank Rhonda, owner of Magpies Cafe for her cooperation and we would also like to congratulate her on creating an asset that is viewed to be an asset to this beautiful historic community.
