St. Patricks Day History
Saint Patrick lived in the fifth century and was the patron saint of Ireland. He earned this title because he is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. St. Patricks Day is celebrated on March 17 each year as a day of feasting to honor the anniversary of the patron saint’s death, believed to be on March 17, 461. Traditionally, Irish families attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon, eating customary meals of Irish bacon and cabbage.
Even though St. Patricks Day is an Irish holiday, the first St. Patricks Day parade actually took place in the United States in 1762. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched down the streets of New York to reconnect with their Irish roots.
